You get hotel pickup from your New Orleans hotel, a 40-minute guided tour of either Oak Alley Plantation or Laura Plantation with a professional guide, and return transport to your hotel. You see the Big House, slave quarters, gardens and 300-year-old oaks without arranging your own transport or timing the drive yourself — the tour handles the logistics so you just show up.
The van was supposed to pick us up at 8:30, and at 8:47 the driver called to say he was running five minutes behind — which turned out to mean he was already outside, and I'd just been staring at my phone. That's the thing about these tours: they're tight enough that you notice when timing slips, but organized enough that it doesn't actually matter. We headed out from the French Quarter with maybe a dozen other people, all of us still half-asleep, heading toward the plantation country that sits just outside New Orleans. The drive itself is part of the thing — you leave the city noise and the streets narrow into something older, quieter.
When we got to Oak Alley Plantation, the first thing you see is the alley itself: 300-year-old oak trees planted in two rows that lead straight toward the Big House, and it's the kind of sight that stops you before you even get out of the van. Our guide walked us through for about 40 minutes, pointing out the architecture, the gardens, the slave quarters — and she didn't rush it or try to make it prettier than it was. You see the house, you see where people lived and worked, you get the weight of the history without anyone trying to soften it. Laura Plantation is the other option on the tour, and it's set up differently: same kind of guided walk, same timeframe, but the grounds feel less manicured, more like you're walking through an actual place that's been lived in rather than preserved.
The pickup covers all the hotels in Uptown, Downtown, and the French Quarter, which means most people staying in the main tourist areas don't have to figure out their own transport or negotiate a ride. If you're staying somewhere else, you can call ahead to arrange a different pickup spot. Seating fills up, so booking ahead isn't optional — it's the thing that gets you a seat and a time you can count on.
