The Experience

Laura Plantation tells the story of West African and Amerindian workers whose skills built the Louisiana colony and shaped Creole culture—visible today in language, cuisine, music, architecture and family traditions. The plantation began in 1805 with seven enslaved people and grew to 186 workers by the Civil War. After emancipation in 1866, most remained in the quarters; descendants still live near the plantation today. The four original slave cabins, built in the 1840s and inhabited until 1977, anchor the historical record on the grounds.

The day runs about six and a half hours total, with roughly two hours spent at the plantation itself. Your guide leads a one-hour-ten-minute tour through the mansion, then you walk the grounds at your own pace and view the slave cabins. The gift shop and a snack area are available before you depart. Transportation is handled—the air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and returns you there, so you don't arrange a separate ride or navigate to the site on your own.
