The experience
Li joked that I was already lost before we even left DC. She pointed out the monuments as we drove, but honestly, I got distracted by the way the morning light hit those old stone buildings. The ride to Mount Vernon was smoother than I expected (I’d braced for traffic), and our guide kept tossing in little facts about Washington that made him feel less like a statue and more like someone you might actually have dinner with. There was this faint scent of grass when we stepped out, not sure if it was the river or just the gardens waking up.
I didn’t realize parts of the mansion were under renovation until we got there, but it didn’t really matter. Walking around Mount Vernon, you still get this weird sense of being watched by history: creaky floorboards, sunlight slanting through wavy glass. Our guide knew all the shortcuts to quieter corners. At one point she pointed out where Washington supposedly liked to sit and think. Maybe it’s silly but I tried to imagine him there, listening to birds instead of politics for once.
Old Town Alexandria felt like another world after that: pastel rowhouses, brick sidewalks that make your feet ache in a good way. We wandered past Christ Church (our guide told us how Washington had his own pew, which seemed both grand and oddly normal), then stopped for bottled water because I’d forgotten mine again. The Masonic Temple loomed over everything, kind of surreal against all those tiny shops. People smiled at us when they heard our guide’s stories: maybe they’d heard them before, maybe not.
By the time we drove back toward DC, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone in hours. There’s something about seeing these places up close, not just reading about them, that sticks with you longer than you expect. Still thinking about that view from the porch at Mount Vernon. It’s quieter than you’d guess.
