You’ll stand beneath Mount Rushmore as sunlight hits granite, hear Lakota stories at Crazy Horse Memorial, watch bison roam Custer State Park, and share laughs over lunch by a quiet lake—all with local guidance and easy pickup from Rapid City. This day trip leaves you feeling like part of the landscape itself.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the faces—everyone talks about the faces—but the way the morning light hit the granite at Mount Rushmore. It’s almost pink if you catch it early enough. Our guide, Mike, handed me coffee (he brings a thermos for everyone) and pointed out little chipmunks darting between rocks. I’d seen a thousand photos of this place but standing there, flags fluttering from every state, it felt oddly quiet. Someone nearby hummed “America the Beautiful” under their breath. I don’t know why that stuck with me.

Crazy Horse Memorial was next, just a short drive but somehow a whole different world. The mountain is still unfinished—just his face and hand so far—and our guide told us how it’s all funded by donations, no government money. There were Lakota dancers performing outside; I tried to say “Mitakuye Oyasin” (all my relations) and Li laughed when I butchered it. The air smelled like pine needles and fry bread from a food stand. We wandered through the museum for a while—so many beadwork pieces, old photographs—I lost track of time.

Custer State Park surprised me most. It’s bigger than I expected and not just open plains—there are these jagged rocks and thick forests too. We drove along Wildlife Loop Road with windows down (Mike said you have to listen for bison snorts). Sure enough, we saw a whole herd blocking traffic like they owned the place. One wild burro poked its nose right into our van looking for snacks—apparently they’re famous for that here. Lunch was sandwiches by a lake, nothing fancy but honestly perfect after all that fresh air.

I still think about that pinkish light on granite and how small people looked against those giant carvings. It’s not just monuments—it’s stories layered over stone and prairie wind. If you go, bring an extra layer; mornings bite even in summer.
