The Experience

We rolled up to Mount Rushmore just as the sun was starting to cut through those stubborn clouds—there’s something about seeing those faces for real that hits different. Our guide, Mike, had this way of pointing out details I’d never noticed in photos (like how Lincoln’s eyes seem to follow you). The Avenue of Flags felt a bit like walking through a living timeline. I grabbed a coffee from Carvers’ Café and tried not to spill it while taking too many pictures. There’s this side profile spot for George Washington that honestly made me laugh—he looks so serious from that angle.

The drive over to Crazy Horse Memorial went quick—about half an hour, just enough time for Mike to share some stories about the sculptor’s family still working on it. We watched a video inside (20 minutes but didn’t feel long), then wandered the museum. I touched this beadwork piece—probably shouldn’t have, but nobody yelled at me. Lunch at Laughing Water Restaurant was an option but we just grabbed snacks and sat outside for a bit, watching clouds drift behind the unfinished face. You can walk through Ziolkowski’s old log home too; it smells like pine and old books in there.

Custer State Park was next—suddenly everything felt wider, quieter. The Wildlife Loop is 18 miles but it didn’t drag; we saw buffalo with calves (I counted five before they wandered off), plus some antelope and these burros that came right up to the van looking for snacks. There was this moment where everyone just got quiet watching them move through the grass. We stopped by Coolidge Inn Store for bathrooms and more coffee before heading back toward Rapid City. Still thinking about those wide open hills—you know?
