The Experience

You're driving out of Rapid City before the morning settles, heading straight into the Black Hills National Forest—a 1.25-million-acre landscape that Neal, your guide, has known since childhood. He's a native South Dakotan with stories that thread through the whole day: Custer's 1874 expedition, the Fort Laramie treaty, the gold discovery that changed everything. About two hours of driving time gets split between the sites, but it's not dead time—the road itself is part of the tour, winding past rugged rock formations, canyons, grassland, and mountain lakes.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is the first stop, and you stand in front of Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln carved into the mountainside. The memorial sits surrounded by the Black Hills, and the history moves through their lives—birth, growth, development, preservation of the country. After that, you're heading toward Crazy Horse Memorial, the largest carving in the world, passing Horsethief Lake and Black Elk Mountain (7,244 feet, the highest peak in South Dakota). Crazy Horse depicts the Oglala Lakota war chief on horseback, pointing to his tribal land, and the Indian Museum of North American is housed in the complex. Then you stop in Custer, the oldest European American settlement in the Black Hills, for lunch on your own—you pick the restaurant.

Custer State Park comes next: 72,000 acres, 1,500 bison roaming free, and other wildlife across rolling prairie and rugged mountains. There's a 20-minute film on the park's history (narrated by Kevin Costner), then you head out on the Wildlife Loop Road to actually find the buffalo. After that comes Iron Mountain Road, one of the most scenic roads in America—it winds through three tunnels, navigates switchbacks and pig-tail bridges, and was intentionally engineered to make you slow down. The road connects Custer State Park with Mount Rushmore and passes through the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve. Your last major stop is Iron Mountain Summit (5,450 feet), also called the Peter Norbeck Scenic Overlook, where Mount Rushmore sits in the distance about a mile away across the valley, and you can see Black Elk Peak, the highest point east of the Rockies.

The tour wraps in Keystone before heading back to Rapid City. Your day includes hotel pickup, bottled water, light snacks, and umbrellas if the weather turns. Lunch is separate, so you're not locked into a group meal.
