Step-by-step itinerary
Morning Jeep tour through Moab
- Meet guide at Moab office
- Drive to trailhead via town and highway
- Traverse red rock canyons by Jeep
- Stop for photos and site exploration
- Listen to guide's geology and history talk
The experience
The tour starts at the Moab office, where your guide meets you with a custom Jeep Gladiator. Depending on which area you're exploring that day, you'll drive through town and along the highway to reach the trailhead. From there, you spend roughly 3 hours traversing through red rock canyons with plenty of stops to get out and examine the sites: crumbling canyon walls, hoodoos that seem to defy gravity, arches tucked into the rock, and petroglyphs left by ancient cultures. The morning tour picks a smoother route than the afternoon runs, so the ride itself is comfortable rather than extreme.
Your guide does the heavy lifting on knowledge. Expect detailed explanations of how Moab's geology came to be so surreal, the wild history of the region, and what the indigenous cultures who lived here left behind. The canvas covering on the vehicle keeps sun off your head while you're stopped, and the open-air design means you're never sealed away from the landscape. A kids scavenger hunt runs through the day, giving younger travelers something to track and spot as you move through the sites.
Getting to the backcountry on foot would take far longer and cover less ground. The Jeep reaches signature sites that would otherwise require serious hiking, and the guide's interpretations turn the scenery into a story rather than just a view. Free parking is included at the office, and you'll arrive back with a much clearer sense of why Moab's landscape is so geologically unique.
