The Experience
The first thing I saw was this weird slice of shadow cutting across Catacomb Rock—like someone took a bite out of the sandstone. We’d barely switched off the UTV engines when that dry, mineral smell hit me (I swear Moab has its own scent). Our guide, Tyler, grinned and handed out helmets and goggles again—he said you’ll want them even when you’re off the wheels because the dust gets everywhere. He wasn’t kidding. I kept brushing it off my hands but it just settled back in.
Inside those caves, it’s cooler than you’d expect. My flashlight beam bounced around these narrow passages that twist so much you lose track of which way is out. There was this one spot where you could crawl through and suddenly there’s a little window cut right into the rock, looking out over the desert—the kind of view that makes you stop talking for a second. Someone found an old petroglyph nearby; Tyler pointed it out but I honestly almost missed it because I was still thinking about that silent view.
Getting back in the UTV felt like waking up from a nap—loud again, sun on your arms, all that red stretching forever. The Chicken Corners Trail is bumpier than I thought (my teeth might still be rattling), but there are these smooth stretches where you can see the Colorado River winding below. Tyler kept cracking jokes about “Moab massages” every time we hit another rut. At some point I realized my water bottle was covered in dust too—guess that’s just part of the deal here.
