The experience

“You wanna see where the dinosaurs walked?” That’s what our guide, Sam, asked as we bumped along a dirt track just outside Moab. I laughed because honestly, I didn’t expect to start an Arches sunset tour with dinosaur footprints. The sun was still high but already throwing that Utah gold on the rocks. Sam pointed out the three-toed prints in the stone. He crouched down and traced one with his finger, dust swirling up in the dry air. It’s strange to stand where something that big once wandered around. Kind of humbling, you know?

The 4x4 rattled and shook as we headed deeper into Arches, windows down so you could smell sage and that hot desert dust. We stopped at Balanced Rock (it looks like it shouldn’t stand up at all), then Courthouse Towers: giant stone walls that made me feel tiny. There were other groups around but it never felt crowded. Maybe because everyone got quiet when Sam told stories about how the arches formed or pointed out little details in the rock layers. At one point he handed us cold water from a cooler in the back: simple thing but after walking out to North Window Arch, it tasted so good.

I’m not much of a photographer but even my phone made those arches look unreal at sunset. We did short walks to Double Arch (apparently Indiana Jones filmed there?) and then just sat for a while at Skyline Arch watching the shadows move. The best part was Park Avenue right before dark: the canyon walls glowed orange and pink and nobody said much for a minute or two. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
