The experience

I was already gripping the armrest when our pilot, Jake, cracked a joke about “air turbulence being just Moab giving us a high five.” We’d barely lifted off before the red rocks started shifting below us, not just flat desert but these wild shapes, like someone let a kid doodle on the landscape. The headset muffled most of the engine noise but I could still hear Jake pointing out Delicate Arch, which looked smaller than I expected from up here.
