The Experience
I was already gripping the armrest when our pilot, Jake, cracked a joke about “air turbulence being just Moab giving us a high five.” We’d barely lifted off before the red rocks started shifting below us — not just flat desert but these wild shapes, like someone let a kid doodle on the landscape. The headset muffled most of the engine noise but I could still hear Jake pointing out Delicate Arch, which looked smaller than I expected from up here. I tried to snap a photo but honestly, my hands were kind of shaky. The air felt dry and clean, almost sharp through the vent.
We banked right over Island in the Sky — that name makes sense when you’re actually above it. You could see the Green River twisting way down, carving out those crazy bends they call Goose Neck. At one point, Jake started telling us about Upheaval Dome (something about a meteorite or salt dome — I lost track because I was staring at shadows crawling along the cliffs). There were moments when everyone went quiet except for someone’s camera clicking too fast. I kept thinking how weird it is to see places like Devil’s Garden and The Maze from this angle — nothing like hiking them on foot.
There was this bit where we passed over Wedding Band Arch and Jake asked if anyone could spot it (I couldn’t). Someone behind me laughed and said it looked more like a pretzel than a ring. The sun kept shifting and suddenly everything glowed orange for maybe two minutes — I still think about that light. It’s funny how 80 minutes in the air felt both long and way too short. When we landed back in Moab, my legs wobbled a little getting out of the plane but it was worth every second.
