The Experience
I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure about getting on an e-bike at 9am — I’m not really a “morning person,” and Milwaukee felt quiet when we showed up. But then our guide, Mark (born and raised here), handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew something I didn’t. The first push off from the Third Ward was easy — that pedal assist is no joke — and suddenly the city was wide awake. There was this smell of coffee drifting out of an old warehouse-turned-café, and someone waved from a stoop. It felt like we were slipping into Milwaukee’s day before it even started for most people.
We zigzagged through so many neighborhoods I lost count — each one had its own story, which Mark seemed to know by heart. He pointed out church steeples poking above the rooftops (“Polish? German? You can tell by the onion domes,” he said), and we stopped under the shadow of City Hall. Eight million bricks, apparently. I tried to imagine laying even ten of them straight — nope. At one point we passed a group of kids playing in a park; their laughter bounced off the old cream city brick buildings. The air by the river was cooler, almost sweet, and you could hear gulls fighting over something near the water.
The best part for me was gliding along the Oak Leaf Trail with Lake Michigan just kind of shimmering off to our right. We paused at North Point Lighthouse — I touched its stone just because it looked like it should feel cold (it did). Someone else in our group tried to pronounce “Calatrava” at the art museum and totally butchered it; Mark laughed but didn’t correct her. There’s something about seeing Discovery World’s glass curve against that blue sky that makes you forget you’re only a few miles from downtown traffic.
We even stopped for photos with the Bronze Fonz (yes, really), which is more fun than it sounds. By the time we looped back toward where we started, I realized I hadn’t thought about my phone or work or anything outside this ride for two hours straight. That’s rare for me — maybe that’s why I still think about this tour every time I see a bike lane now.
