The Experience

“You’ll get the hang of it in five minutes,” our guide Marco promised, grinning as he handed me a helmet. I wasn’t so sure — my balance is questionable at best — but after wobbling around the parking lot in South Beach for a bit, I started to trust the Segway. The sun was already bright (bring sunglasses), and there was that salty Miami smell in the air, mixed with sunscreen and something sweet from a bakery nearby. We set off behind Marco, who waved at every dog we passed like he knew them personally.

I didn’t expect to care much about architecture, but rolling past those pastel Art Deco buildings — honestly, they do look like candy boxes — I got why people go on about them. Marco pointed out details I’d never notice: the curved glass corners, neon trim, even some old hotel where Sinatra supposedly stayed. He told us stories about South Beach that made it feel less like a postcard and more like someone’s neighborhood. At Lincoln Road, we stopped for water and watched people skate by with iced coffees balanced in one hand. There’s this constant hum here — music drifting from somewhere, Spanish mixing with English, always movement.

The Holocaust Memorial hit differently than I expected. It’s quiet there; you hear your own footsteps on the path. The sculpture is huge and raw up close — not something you just glance at while gliding by. Afterward, we rolled over to the Miami Beach Botanical Garden (I could’ve stayed longer), which smelled faintly green and earthy even with all the city noise around it. My favorite bit was South Pointe Park at the end — sea breeze in your face, cruise ships sliding out to sea. Marco joked about how he still can’t afford any of those yachts but waves anyway.

I still think about that first nervous moment on the Segway — then suddenly feeling free as we zipped along Ocean Drive with palm shadows flickering over us. If you want a day trip in Miami that feels both easygoing and kind of electric (plus includes all the gear), this is it.
