The Experience
“Don’t worry, even if you fall in, the water’s warm,” our guide grinned as she handed me a paddleboard. I was honestly nervous — I’d never tried stand up paddle before, and Miami’s mangroves looked both peaceful and kind of mysterious in the early light. There was a faint salty smell in the air mixed with something leafy and sweet, like wet earth after rain. The group was small, mostly locals except for me and a couple from Chicago who kept joking about alligators (there aren’t any here, by the way — our guide rolled her eyes).
We set off slowly, some on kayaks, some standing wobbly like me. The water was so still under the trees that you could see tiny fish darting around your paddle. At one point I almost lost my balance trying to avoid a low branch — got splashed but stayed upright (barely). Our guide pointed out an osprey nest and showed us how to spot raccoon tracks along the edge of Sandspur Island (she called it Raccoon Island — apparently locals always do). We stopped there for a while, just sitting on our boards eating cold watermelon and letting our feet dangle in the water. You could hear cicadas buzzing somewhere high up and the distant hum of boats far away, but mostly it was just quiet except for us talking softly.
I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed out there — maybe it was being surrounded by all that green or just drifting along at our own pace. My arms got tired but in a good way, like you’ve actually done something real with your body. On the way back someone started a splash fight (not me this time), and I laughed so hard I nearly tipped over again. No bathrooms out there — fair warning — but honestly, I didn’t mind. I still think about that calm feeling when we drifted under those tangled branches.
