Two hours paddling Lamar Lake and Biscayne Bay, manatees in season, skyline views when the wind allows

A guided paddle tour from Virginia Key in Miami takes you onto Lamar Lake and into Biscayne Bay for up to two hours in a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, with rental gear, life jackets, paddles and instruction included. Between November and April, manatees migrate into the bay and sightings are highly likely; outside those months, dolphins, spotted eagle rays, great blue herons and other local wildlife are common. Weather and currents permitting, you paddle along the Atlantic Coast or into the bay to see Downtown Miami's skyline from the water.

The Experience

You start with a safety briefing and paddle instruction from a licensed guide who speaks English or Spanish. The guide leads the group onto the water for up to two hours, choosing the route based on wind and current conditions. Lamar Lake is Miami's top spot for manatee sightings during the November-to-April season, when large peaceful manatees migrate into Biscayne Bay; outside those months, the same waters hold dolphins, spotted eagle rays, herons and other birds. The paddle takes in both natural and urban scenes—mangrove shorelines and open water mixed with the view of Downtown Miami's skyline rising from the bay when conditions allow.

You choose between a single kayak, a tandem kayak or a stand-up paddleboard before you book. All three come with paddles, a US Coast Guard approved life jacket and a waterproof bag for your phone, wallet and car keys. The guide handles the route decisions and pacing, so you focus on paddling and watching the water. Currents and wind permitting, you can paddle along the Atlantic Coast or venture into the bay itself—the route shifts based on what the day offers.
