Step-by-step itinerary
Kayak and snorkel West Maui shore
- Paddle along West Maui shoreline
- Stop to snorkel beautiful reefs
The Experience
We were already ankle-deep in Maui’s morning when our guide, Kaleo, started handing out paddles and cracking jokes about his “terrible singing voice” echoing off the West Maui Mountains. I could smell sunscreen and that salty breeze — you know the one that sticks to your skin? The kayaks looked sturdy enough (I always worry a little), but after some quick tips on the sand, we slid into the water. The first few strokes felt wobbly, but there was this easy rhythm to it once we got going.
Paddling along the shoreline, it was quieter than I expected — just us, a couple of other small groups, and those mountains in the distance. Kaleo pointed out a sea turtle poking its head up (I nearly dropped my paddle). He told us a bit about the reefs we’d be snorkeling soon; apparently these spots are favorites for locals too, not just tourists. We stopped at a cove where the water turned that unreal shade of blue-green. I hesitated before jumping in — mask fogged up immediately — but once under, everything slowed down. Fish darted around coral like confetti. I lost track of time floating there.
After maybe 45 minutes (could’ve been five or fifty), we climbed back onto our kayaks. Someone passed around pineapple slices — sticky sweet fingers, sun on my back. On the way back to shore, Kaleo asked where everyone was from and tried to say “Mahalo” in each accent; he butchered mine completely and grinned about it. My arms were tired by then but honestly? Didn’t mind at all.
