Early morning kayak out from makena landing snorkeling with turtles and stories of hawaiian culture

You’ll start early at Makena Landing with a friendly local guide who’ll teach you kayaking basics before paddling out onto calm Maui waters. Snorkel above colorful reefs and spot Hawaiian green sea turtles up close, learning bits of language and history along the way. There’s laughter, salt air, and real moments you’ll carry home long after your arms stop aching.

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Attend land safety and kayaking briefing
  • Launch kayaks with guide assistance
  • Paddle to sandy ocean spot
  • Anchor kayaks and snorkel

The Experience

I didn’t expect to be laughing before 8am, but there we were—standing barefoot on the sand at Makena Landing, fumbling with life jackets while our guide, Keola, cracked jokes about how not to paddle in circles. The sun wasn’t harsh yet, just kind of soft around the edges. There was this faint smell of salt and sunscreen in the air—someone’s coconut lotion, maybe mine. I always forget if I put enough on my nose.

Keola walked us through the basics—how to hold the paddle so you don’t whack your neighbor (which I did anyway), where we’d anchor out on the water, what fish we might see. He slipped a few words of Hawaiian into his sentences, then had us repeat them back. Li laughed when I tried to say “honu” for sea turtle—probably butchered it. The kayaks felt steadier than I thought they’d be. We pushed off together; the water was glassy and surprisingly cool against my hands when I dipped them overboard.

Out past the first little reef, Keola pointed down and suddenly there they were—two green sea turtles drifting below us like old souls. He anchored us over a sandy patch (he said that’s safest for the coral), and told us just to slide off the side whenever we were ready. That first plunge—mask foggy, heart thumping a bit—I remember how quiet it was underwater except for my own breath. Fish everywhere: yellow ones darting around my knees, something blue near a chunk of coral. It’s weird how time slips away when you’re floating like that.

We paddled back slower than we left—arms tired but in that good way. Someone asked Keola about his favorite local food and he started talking about poke for breakfast; now I can’t stop thinking about it. He promised to send us GoPro footage later (I’m half-worried how goofy I’ll look). Even now, days later, I still think about those turtles gliding by under our kayaks—it’s hard not to smile remembering it all.
