The Experience

The first thing I remember is the hush inside the Escalade as we pulled away from the hotel—leather seats still cool from the AC, my coffee trembling just a little in its cup holder. Our guide, Kaleo, had this easy way of talking about Maui’s history that made even the old sugar mill ruins outside Paia feel alive. He slowed down so we could watch surfers at Ho’okipa Beach Park—tiny dots riding these wild blue lines—and I swear you could smell sea spray through the window. It was early but already bright; someone in our group kept pointing out every rainbow (there were a lot).

The Road to Hana itself is kind of hypnotic—one turn after another, bamboo forests flickering past like green stripes. We stopped at Puaʻa Kaʻa State Wayside Park for a quick dip; the water was cold enough to make me yelp but it felt good after sitting for an hour. At one point, Kaleo handed us fresh banana bread from Auntie Sandie’s stand on Ke’anae Peninsula. Still warm, sweet and sticky—maybe too sweet? But honestly I didn’t care. There was this moment when we all just sat on a rock wall eating and not really talking, just listening to birds and that far-off sound of waves.

Lunch in Hana was our choice—Kaleo had a list but let us debate it out (I picked Thai food, which got some laughs). Afterward we wandered over black sand at Waiʻānapanapa Beach; the sand felt weirdly soft under my feet, almost powdery. On the way back he pulled over at Ho’okipa again so we could see green turtles sunning themselves on the rocks—so lazy-looking I wanted to lie down next to them. By then I’d lost track of time completely.

I keep thinking about that stretch between rain showers when everything smelled sharp and green and somehow ancient. The whole day felt unhurried—even with all those miles—and I liked not having to plan or drive or worry about lunch (or snacks… there were so many snacks).
