The Road to Hana isn't a fixed checklist—it's a 64-mile coastal drive with 640 turns and curves, built in the early 1900s on narrow concrete and steel bridges, and your guide stops where the day takes you. You'll pass through bamboo forest alongside the highway, pull over at Hoʻokipa Beach to watch windsurfers and Hawaiian green sea turtles, and swim at waterfalls that locals actually use. The van leaves at pickup time from your hotel, and the whole thing runs about eight hours, so you're not rushing.

Waiʻanapanapa State Park is the centerpiece—the black sand beach there came from a lava flow only 10,000 years ago, and the water is cobalt blue against the black rocks. Your guide takes you to volcanic caves and lava tubes you can walk through, and if the timing is right, you might see the blowhole where a lava tube meets the ocean and water shoots 20 feet in the air. Puaʻa Kaʻa State Wayside Park has two waterfalls on the Mauka side where you can actually swim; bring a swimsuit layered under your clothes and water shoes if you have them. Bottled water comes with you all day, and chips are provided. The van is air-conditioned, which matters on a winding road.

If you're booking last-minute (within a day), you might meet the van at 434 Kahiki St in Kahului instead of your hotel.
