The experience
The Road to Hana is known as the longest scenic coastal highway in the world, and this tour takes you the full route with a guide who knows where to stop. You start with pickup from your Lahaina hotel or condo at 7:00am (cruise ship guests can arrange a later departure timed 45 minutes after arrival at Lahaina Harbor), then spend the day navigating the rain forest, bamboo groves and hairpin turns that make this drive legendary. The vehicle is air-conditioned, which matters on a route where the road itself is the main event.
The stops are built around water. You swim in the lower and upper waterfalls at Puaʻa Kaʻa State Wayside Park, walk the Pipiwai Trail through a towering bamboo forest, and reach Waiʻanapanapa State Park at the far end for the black-sand beach, freshwater caves and a blowhole. Along the way you pass Waikani Waterfalls and stop at Keanae peninsula, a traditional Hawaiian village famous for taro farms and poi production. The right side of the bus offers the best photo angles at certain overlooks. The guide will point them out.
Meals are included: spam musubi and yogurt for breakfast (if booked before 3:00pm the day before), and your choice of turkey sub, ham sub, roast beef sub or veggie wrap for lunch. Complimentary water and chips come throughout the day. The full experience runs 7 to 11 hours depending on conditions and how long you spend at each stop. Tours are suitable for all fitness levels, though the road itself is winding and the day is long.
