The Experience

You're arriving in Boston with a day to spend, or you've got an afternoon free and want to see more than the city itself. This tour takes you out to Lexington and Concord first — the towns where the American Revolution actually began — then brings you back to Boston to walk the Freedom Trail. The route covers roughly 40 miles, but the drive is part of the story: you'll pass the Battle Road Trail, the same path the British took on April 19, 1775, when they marched toward Concord and found the Minutemen waiting.

The day starts at Lexington Battle Green, the open field where the first shots were fired. You'll see the belfry building that sounded the alarm, the Buckman Tavern where the Minutemen gathered before the British arrived, and the spot where Paul Revere was arrested during his midnight ride — the poem got a lot wrong, and your guide will tell you what actually happened. From there you walk or drive sections of the Battle Road Trail, stopping at the Hartwell Tavern, a colonial-era building that stood there on the day of the battle. The landscape is quieter now, but the geography makes the skirmishes real: you can see why the British had trouble on the march back to Boston.

Concord is next. You'll visit the Old North Bridge, where the Minutemen routed the Redcoats, and see the grave of the first British casualties — the place where the phrase "shot heard around the world" comes from. The town is also famous for its writers: you'll drive past the Orchard House where Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women, the house where three major authors lived at different times, and Author's Ridge in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Hawthorne, Alcott, Emerson, and Thoreau are buried. The Old Manse, where Ralph Waldo Emerson grew up, sits on the property overlooking the bridge.

After lunch at a local farm-to-table market in Boston (lunch is on your own, with 20+ vendors offering seafood, sandwiches, and sweets), the tour moves to the Freedom Trail sites. You'll tour the USS Constitution, the oldest working wooden ship in the world, still in service since 1797 and nicknamed "Old Ironsides" after the War of 1812. The Old North Church comes next — you'll sit in Paul Revere's actual pew and learn the story behind "one if by land, two if by sea." The tour ends at the Bunker Hill Monument and the Paul Revere House in the North End, one of Boston's oldest wooden buildings where Revere lived for 20 years with his wife and 16 children.
