The Experience

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect when we got picked up from our hotel on the Strip — you know how sometimes tours feel a bit too packaged? But our driver, Mike, started sharing stories about old Vegas and the Air Force jets that fly over Nellis Dunes. It was early but somehow everyone in the van perked up. There’s something weirdly exciting about leaving all those neon lights behind and seeing nothing but sand and scrub brush out the window.

At the staging area, there was this dry wind that made my hair stick up under the helmet (they give you gloves and goggles too — I looked ridiculous). The guide went over safety stuff without making it scary, just practical. My hands were already dusty before we even started. When the engines fired up, it was loud — in a good way — and then we were off, following each other like some kind of bumpy parade through these white sandy hills. I kept thinking I’d get lost if I blinked, but you can always spot the guide’s red bandana ahead.

Halfway through, we stopped at this peak where you could actually see the Strip shimmering way off in the distance. Someone joked about how tiny it looked compared to all this emptiness. I tried to take a photo but honestly it didn’t do it justice — there’s this dry heat and silence that just doesn’t show up on camera. On the way back, my arms felt like jelly from gripping so tight (maybe I should’ve relaxed more), but I couldn’t stop grinning. The dust gets everywhere — still found some in my shoes later that night.
