The experience

The first thing I remember is the crunch of gravel under my boots: way sharper than I expected as we stepped out at base camp, somewhere south of the Strip. The sun wasn’t too harsh yet, but you could already smell the dry air and engine oil. Our guide, Mike (who looked like he’d done this a thousand times), handed me a helmet and grinned: “You’ll want this.” He ran through the safety stuff fast but clear. Maybe because he knew everyone just wanted to get going. It’s funny how nerves mix with excitement when you’re staring at a row of Polaris RZRs lined up against all that empty Nevada desert.

I took the wheel first. The RZR felt solid but twitchy over rocks: like it was daring me to go faster. We followed Mike’s lead as dust kicked up behind us. I caught a glimpse of Goodsprings off to the side, looking like something out of an old movie. There were cacti everywhere, some almost cartoonish. At one point we stopped so Mike could point out where miners used to haul silver, he told us about a bar fight that happened right there in 1915 (or was it 1916? He wasn’t sure). The wind picked up for a second and you could taste grit in your teeth. My hands were shaking, not scared, just buzzing from the ride.

Lunch at the Pioneer Saloon was…well, honestly, it was better than I expected. Inside smelled like woodsmoke and old whiskey. Walls covered in stories and signatures. Our burgers came out quick and hot. I think mine disappeared in about three bites. There was this older guy at the bar who nodded at us like we’d passed some kind of test getting there on four wheels instead of four hooves. Even now I can hear the screen door creak every time someone stepped outside for air or maybe just to stare at those mountains for a minute longer.

On the way back I let my friend drive and just watched everything blur by: the sky somehow bigger out here than anywhere else near Las Vegas. It’s not really about adrenaline or history or even lunch. It’s something about feeling small in all that space and then laughing about it later over fries.
