The experience

I didn’t realize how much I missed those old Motown songs until we walked into the Modern Showroom at Alexis Park Resort. There was this low hum of excitement: people chatting, a couple next to us arguing about which Supremes song would open the set. The lights were soft but the energy felt sharp, like everyone was just waiting for something to start. When the Duchesses of Motown finally took the stage (led by Ms. Tonja Jones, who really does have that “I’ve seen it all” confidence), I got goosebumps. It wasn’t just nostalgia. It was louder and warmer than that.

They hit every classic (Gladys Knight, Martha and The Vandellas, even some Jackson 5 thrown in), and honestly, I caught myself singing along more than once (quietly, promise). Our row started clapping in time during “Dancing in the Street,” and one guy behind us couldn’t help but stand up and dance. No one cared. It felt like we were all in on it together. The sound was big but not too polished. Just enough grit to make it feel real. At one point, Li (my partner) tried to mimic a Temptations move and nearly tripped over my feet: she’ll never let me forget that.

The show runs about 75 minutes but time sort of blurs when you’re in it. Even after the last note faded out, people lingered near their seats, humming or talking about which song hit them hardest. I still think about how Ms. Tonja Jones smiled at a little girl in the front row, felt like she was passing something down, you know? If you’re looking for a night out in Vegas that isn’t just slot machines or big headliners, this is something different. It’s got heart.
