The experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much before the show even started. We were barely inside the Las Vegas Magic Theater when someone handed us popcorn (warm, oddly comforting) and waved us toward these little tables up front. It’s not like those huge Vegas shows. This felt more like someone’s living room, if their living room had velvet curtains and a stage just a few feet away. The air smelled faintly of caramel from the popcorn, mixed with something floral I couldn’t place.

Our magician that night was Losander. He greeted us himself, which threw me off in a good way. He asked where we were from, cracked a joke about my husband’s accent, and then suddenly there was a coin in my ear. The whole thing was so close I could see the tiny scratches on his rings. At one point he floated a table right in front of us. I actually reached out to touch it (he grinned and winked). There were kids in the audience too, giggling every time he involved them. It’s wild how quickly you forget you’re watching tricks. It feels like you’re part of some inside joke everyone’s sharing.

I tried to say thank you in German at the end (Losander is German), but probably butchered it because he just laughed and gave me an exaggerated bow. Walking out into the neon after all that warmth felt weirdly abrupt.
