The experience
Eight to nine hours takes you from the 6,800-foot elevation of Saddle Road down through the Big Island's shifting microclimates to the coast. The route begins with hotel pickup and heads east through rainforests to Hilo, where you stop inside Kaumana Caves (a lava tube carved by Mauna Loa), and at Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot drop that draws visitors to this side of the island. After lunch at Hilo Sharks Coffee, the tour follows the Red Road south along the Puna Coast, a stretch of black cliffs and rocky shoreline where lush forest gives way to the island's youngest volcanic landscape. The road ends at Kalapana, a town mostly buried by lava in 1990.
The second half climbs back into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to Kilauea's summit. You drive past pit craters, steaming ground, and lava flows (some centuries old, some recent), and gaze into the vast summit caldera that formed 500 years ago. The guide explains what you're seeing both above and below ground, and there's time to stop and look around at each major point. Bottled water and snacks travel with you. Close-toed shoes are required.
The tour operates in all weather and is wheelchair accessible. A maximum of six people per booking keeps the van small enough to move through the park and stop frequently without the feel of a larger group.
What’s included
- Hotel or airport pickup and drop-off.

Operated by The Volcano Van Private Tours
Is this one for you?Choose the private option if your group wants the flexibility to set its own pace at each stop and linger at the sites that matter most to you. The shared small-group tour keeps costs lower and pairs you with other travelers interested in the same route. Either way, groups stay under six people, so the van is small enough to access the park's quieter stops and pull over whenever something catches your eye.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 13).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's inside Kaumana Caves and why does the guide take us there?
Kaumana Caves is a lava tube: a tunnel carved by molten rock from Mauna Loa volcano. The guide uses it to show how lava tubes shaped Hawaii's creation and landscape, making it a concrete example of the volcanic forces still at work on the island.
Does the tour actually reach the ocean, or just the park?
The tour reaches the Puna Coast along the Red Road, where you see black cliffs, rocky shorelines and crashing waves. It ends at Kalapana on the southeast flank of Kilauea, the island's youngest and most scenic coastline, before heading back inland to the summit.
How much walking or hiking is involved in this tour?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible. Most of the day is spent in the van traveling between stops. You get out to look around at each major site (the caves, the falls, the summit caldera), but there's no strenuous hiking required.
Can I book this as a private tour, or does it have to be shared?
You can choose either a private tour or a shared small-group option at checkout. Both include the same route, guide, pickup and lunch. The private option means your group travels alone in the van.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my tour?
The tour operates in all weather conditions. Dress appropriately for rain, wind and cooler temperatures at the higher elevations, especially at Kilauea's summit where conditions can change quickly.
