The Experience

We kicked up a little dust as we rolled out from Ohana Ranch, helmets a bit loose but spirits high. The Big Island air smelled like rain even though the sun was out — that weird mix you only get in Hawaii. Our guide, Kaleo, waved us forward with this big grin and I swear he knew every bump in those trails. We started slow, just getting used to the ATVs, wheels humming over packed earth and grass that brushed our ankles.

I didn’t expect the quiet parts — you think “ATV tour” and imagine roaring engines, but sometimes it was just wind and birds, with guava trees flashing by. Kaleo stopped us under a shady grove where the ground was soft and kind of springy. He handed me a fruit (I still can’t pronounce it right), showed us how to twist it off gently so the tree stays happy. Juice ran down my wrist when I bit in — sweet but not too much. Li laughed at my sticky hands.

We met some goats who seemed suspicious of our helmets (can’t blame them). There was this old donkey too, who apparently thinks he owns the ranch; he let me scratch his nose for exactly three seconds before wandering off. Kaleo told stories about his family farming here for generations — something about taro fields and coffee plants that made me realize how much work goes into these green hills. I tried to repeat one of the Hawaiian words back to him and got it all wrong; he laughed and corrected me without making it weird.

The ride back felt different — maybe because I’d seen more than just trails: old fences patched with wire, clouds snagged on Mauna Loa way off in the distance. My boots were muddy and my hair smelled like wet grass. I keep thinking about that first bite of fruit under the trees — simple things stick with you sometimes.
