Summary

Drive ATVs through Hamakua ranchlands, taste local fruits, watch wild animals and reach the ocean’s edge

You’ll drive your own ATV across a working Big Island ranch with a local guide leading you through lush fields and along duck ponds. Taste whatever fruit is in season (seriously—right off the tree), watch wild horses or donkeys wander past, and pause above dramatic ocean cliffs for views you’ll remember long after you leave.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“You ever tried a fresh pomegranate right off the tree?” That’s how our guide, Kimo, greeted us as we clambered into these chunky 4WD ATVs at WOH Ranch on the Big Island. I was still fiddling with my helmet strap when he handed me a slice—sticky-sweet, a little tart, juice running down my wrist before I could even answer. The air smelled like wet grass and something faintly smoky from a distant brush pile. We were already laughing about how muddy we’d get.

The ranch is huge—over 500 acres—and honestly, I lost track of which direction was mauka or makai after about five minutes. Kimo just waved us along past rows of bananas (he said there are 57 types but I only recognized two), dwarf coconuts peeking out from under big leaves, and ponds where ducks scattered as we rolled by. There were cows everywhere—some with calves so new they wobbled when they stood up—and at one point I swear a wild donkey stared us down like it owned the place. The ATVs bounced over ruts and sometimes you’d catch this sudden view of the Hamakua coastline that made everyone go quiet for a second.

We stopped near the old sugarcane ditch—Kimo told us stories about how it used to run sweet water all the way to Hilo back in his grandpa’s time. He pointed out taro patches and let us try some kind of pear (I think he called it “exotic,” but it tasted almost like apple to me). My hands were sticky again. There was this moment when we reached the edge of the land—just grass, wind, and then straight down to blue-black ocean far below. You could see Maui if you squinted through the haze. It felt like standing at the very end of something big.

I didn’t expect to care much about cows or bananas going in, but now I keep thinking about that salty breeze mixing with all those green smells, and how everyone—even my cousin who hates dirt—was grinning by the end. If you want a day trip on Big Island that’s more than just driving around, this ATV ranch ride is different in all the right ways.
