The Experience

I didn’t expect to start my day in Hilo standing in a garden that felt like it belonged somewhere in Japan, but there we were—Liliʻuokalani Gardens, quiet except for a few kids chasing each other around the banyan trees. Our guide, Kaleo, pointed out a tiny stone bridge and told us how the gardens came to be. The air smelled faintly sweet, maybe plumeria? I’m not sure. It was still early and the sun hadn’t burned off the morning mist yet.

Rainbow Falls was next—a short drive, but you could already hear the water before we got out of the van. There’s this moment when you step up to the railing and see the spray catching sunlight just right. I tried (badly) to catch a rainbow on my phone camera, but mostly I remember how loud it was and how people seemed to just stand quietly for a minute or two. Kaleo told us about an old legend tied to the falls—something about a battle—but honestly I was too distracted by the sound and that damp earthy smell.

The main reason I booked this Big Island volcano tour was Kilauea. We started at the visitor center where they had these old lava rocks you could touch—rough, kind of sharp-edged—and then walked over to look at the steaming caldera. It’s strange seeing something so massive just sitting there smoking away. The Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube) walk was darker than I expected; cool inside, echoey footsteps, everyone whispering for no reason at all. Lunch after that felt earned—some kind of grilled fish with rice at this cozy place in Volcano Village (they had veggie stuff too). I still think about that meal when I smell grilled ginger.

Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach was last. The sand really is black—like ground-up charcoal but softer—and we saw two sea turtles just lounging near the shore like regulars who’d claimed their spot ages ago. Someone nearby offered me fresh fruit from their cooler (starfruit? Not sure what it was called), which tasted way better than anything back home. We were all pretty quiet on the drive back to Hilo—tired in a good way, watching palm trees flick past outside.

What’s included

Your day includes pickup and drop-off anywhere in Hilo (hotels, port or Airbnbs), entry fees everywhere you go—including Hawaii Volcanoes Park—plus hands-on artifact stops along the way, fresh local fruit samples shared en route, and a sit-down lunch at a local restaurant with plenty of veggie-friendly options before heading back home again.
