The experience

“You sure you wanna drive?” That’s what our guide, Jake, asked as he handed me the helmet outside Kanab. I laughed because honestly, I was a little nervous. Those UTVs look like toys until you’re sitting in one. The air smelled dry and sharp, like sagebrush after a long sun. We bounced along the red dirt track, dust flying everywhere (I still found sand in my shoes later), and Jake kept telling stories about his granddad running cattle here before there were tours or even real roads.

The first stop was Peekaboo Slot Canyon. I’d seen photos but didn’t expect how quiet it felt inside. Just soft echoes of our footsteps and that cool shade wrapping around us. The walls twist up so close you can touch both sides if you stretch out your arms. At one point, Jake pointed out some old markings. He called them “cowboy graffiti.” I tried to get a photo but just ended up staring at the way the sunlight slipped down those orange curves. A couple from Salt Lake let their kid roll down it laughing so loud it echoed all over. We sat for a while just watching shadows move across the sand.
