30 minutes throttling through Maunalua Bay on a state-of-the-art Yamaha, framed by the Ko'olau Mountains
Rent a tandem Yamaha jet ski for a 30-minute ride in Maunalua Bay, Oahu, with a safety briefing, lifejacket and boat transport to the launch platform. You control the pace: rev it hard through the calm waters or cruise and take in the Hawai'i Kai coastline, Koko Crater and Koko Head. The full activity runs 90 minutes dock to dock, including the briefing and the barge ride back to shore.
The experience
You meet at the location in Hawai'i Kai, change into your bathing suit and board a boat that carries you out to the activity barge anchored in Maunalua Bay. A 10-minute safety briefing and operating instructions happen before you touch the throttle. Then you put on a lifejacket, an instructor helps you onto the double jet ski, and you have 30 minutes to ride however you want: flat out or slow enough to watch the scenery. The sea here stays calm with soft waves, which is why it's known for watersports.
The bay is framed by the Ko'olau Mountains and ringed by some of Oahu's top sights: the Hawai'i Kai coastline, Koko Crater and Koko Head. Whether you're cutting white-water patterns at speed or meandering through the water, you're riding in one of the island's best-known spots for this kind of thing. After your 30 minutes, you hand the jet ski back to the instructor and ride the barge back to the starting point.
The rental is priced per person for a tandem ride. You and one other person share the jet ski. A solo upgrade is available if you want to ride alone, and goggles can be rented for an extra charge. Bring your own swimwear and towel. Spray sunscreen is not allowed on the boat. You need to be at least 16 years old to drive, and at least 5 years old to ride as a passenger with an adult. The jet ski has a weight capacity of around 450 pounds.
