The experience
What does it take to climb safely on snow and ice? This clinic answers that question on Mt. Shasta's lower slopes, where you'll spend the day learning the techniques every mountaineer needs. You'll practice ice axe use for balance and self-arrest (the move that stops a fall on steep terrain), and master crampon footwork for ascending and descending firm snow. The instruction is hands-on: you'll work through step-cutting and climbing techniques under the eye of experienced guides who've climbed big mountains themselves.
The course is built for newer climbers and anyone brushing up before a serious climb, whether that's Mt. Shasta itself or a peak elsewhere. All the technical gear comes with you: crampons, helmet, ice axe, and the wilderness permit required to be on the mountain. You arrive ready to learn, not to hunt down equipment or sort out access. The eight-hour format gives you time to drill each technique until it becomes automatic. The point of a clinic is to build muscle memory before you're on a real summit push.
