Summary

Meet llamas and alpacas up close on a Hudson Valley farm walk

You’ll wander a working Hudson Valley farm, meet quirky goats and friendly barn cats, then learn llama and alpaca basics before heading out on an easy hike past ponds and paddocks. Expect animal shenanigans, local stories from your guide, plenty of photo ops—and a peaceful break from city noise.

We stepped through the old wooden gate just as the morning sun was warming up the grass — you could smell hay and something sweet in the air (maybe clover?). Our guide, Jamie, waved us over with a grin and introduced us to the goats first. One of them tried to nibble my sleeve. There were donkeys too, plus these barn cats that acted like they owned the place. Jamie told us a quick story about how her family’s been here since 1850. I kept thinking about what it must be like to wake up here every day.

The main event though: meeting the llamas and alpacas. They’re softer than you’d expect — like petting a cloud that occasionally hums at you. We had this short “Llama/Alpaca 101” crash course (I learned not to stand right behind them — fair enough). Jamie answered all our weird questions without blinking. I tried saying “guanaco” out loud; she laughed but didn’t judge my pronunciation.

Then we set off for the hike, each of us leading our own llama or alpaca along these gentle trails through pastures and by this quiet little bass pond. The animals walked slow, almost meditative, pausing to sniff at wildflowers or just stare into space (relatable). At one point my llama stopped dead to watch some ducks flapping around — I just stood there with him, listening to frogs and distant sheep bleating. I still think about that moment sometimes when things get noisy back home.

We finished near their small farm store where you could pick up yarn or soap made right here. I left with muddy shoes and about fifty photos of my new four-legged friend looking unimpressed by my selfie skills. So yeah, if you want something different from your usual Hudson Valley day trip — this llama & alpaca hike is it.
