Step-by-step itinerary

Hoover Dam and Lake Mead tour

  • Photo stop at Welcome to Las Vegas sign
  • Explore Hoover Dam and power plant tour
  • View Hoover Dam from bypass bridge
  • Enjoy photo opportunities at Nevada and Arizona lookouts
  • Experience Lake Mead from multiple viewing areas

The Experience

The tour starts with a photo stop at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign, then heads out to Hoover Dam for the main event. Once there, you get 2 hours to explore on your own terms—walk the bypass bridge, stand at the Nevada and Arizona lookout points, and take in Lake Mead from multiple viewing areas. The guided power plant tour takes you inside the Nevada Powerhouse to see the generators at work, and you'll walk through the original construction tunnels that built the dam in the 1930s. A self-guided tour at the Visitor's Center fills in the historical details if you want them.

Hotel pickup from most major properties on the Strip and Downtown is included, so the morning logistics are handled. The whole outing—from pickup to drop-off—takes 4.5 hours. Parking and admission to the dam are both covered. The tour is wheelchair accessible throughout, and infants ride free; service animals are welcome with current paperwork.

One practical note: if the interior of the dam is unavailable on your visit day, the operator adds extra stops elsewhere on the tour to keep the experience complete. Luggage, large backpacks, drugs and alcohol are not allowed on the motorcoach due to security restrictions. If you have a pacemaker, you won't be able to enter the dam itself because of the electromagnets in use inside.

Top questions

What exactly is the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman bypass bridge?

The Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Bridge is the newly built bypass bridge that carries traffic over the Colorado River just downstream from Hoover Dam. The tour includes views from this bridge, giving you perspective on both the dam and the river gorge from a vantage point that didn't exist until recently.

Do I get to go inside Hoover Dam on this tour?

Yes. The guided power plant tour takes you inside the Nevada Powerhouse to see the generators, and you'll walk through the original construction tunnels from the 1930s. You also get access to the self-guided tour at the Visitor's Center. If the interior is closed on your visit day, the operator adds alternative stops to keep the tour complete.

Is hotel pickup really included, or is there an extra charge?

Hotel pickup is included in the tour price. The bus collects passengers from most major hotels on the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Area and returns them at the end of the 4.5-hour tour.

What is Lake Mead, and why is it part of this tour?

Lake Mead is one of the world's largest man-made lakes, created by the Hoover Dam itself. The tour includes multiple viewing areas where you can see the lake and the spillway from different angles, giving you a sense of the dam's scale and the landscape it transformed.

Can I bring luggage or a backpack on the bus?

No. Large backpacks and luggage are prohibited on the motorcoach due to security restrictions. Small personal items are fine, but plan accordingly if you're traveling with bags.

What languages does the guide speak?

The guide conducts the tour in English and Spanish, so you can follow along in either language.
