The Experience
What makes this different from a typical sightseeing boat tour is that you're at the helm. You drive an inflatable mini boat that holds 2, 3 or 4 people—pick the size that fits your group at checkout—while your guide navigates the route and points out what's worth seeing. The boats are easy to operate; no boating experience is required, only a valid driver's license if you're the one steering. You'll move at a pace that lets you actually absorb the water, the landmarks and the wildlife instead of being herded through a fixed schedule on someone else's boat.
The route takes you past the red and white Harbourtown lighthouse, built in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a draw for tourists, and along the shoreline of Daufuskie Island, which sits just offshore and is only reachable by boat. You'll cruise past some of Hilton Head's quieter beaches, the world-famous Harbour Town Golf Links (which hosts the PGA Heritage Golf Tournament every April), and the backwater creeks where the ecosystem shifts and the wildlife changes. Throughout the 2 hours, your guide shares the island's history, explains the local ecosystem and watches for dolphins, egrets, ospreys and pelicans—sightings are common but never guaranteed.
Life jackets and bottled water are included. You'll need to arrive 20 minutes before your start time. The tour isn't recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy, but it suits all fitness levels otherwise. Drivers must be at least 21 and hold a valid license; passengers can be as young as 5.

Can I really drive the boat myself, or is the guide doing the steering?
You drive your own mini boat throughout the tour. The guide leads the group and provides narration about the sights, history and wildlife, but you control your boat's speed and direction within the group's route.
What are the chances of seeing dolphins on this tour?
Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are common in Hilton Head waters, and the guide positions the group in areas where sightings are likely. The tour also passes egrets, ospreys and pelicans regularly, though wildlife viewing is never guaranteed on any given day.
How many people can fit in one mini boat?
Each inflatable mini boat holds 2, 3 or 4 people. You choose the boat size when you book, and everyone in your boat rides together for the full 2 hours.
What is Daufuskie Island, and do we land there?
Daufuskie Island is a rustic, car-free island just offshore that's only accessible by boat. The tour cruises past it so you see its charm from the water; most visitors who want to explore it book a separate day trip to go ashore.
Do I need boating experience or a captain's license to drive the mini boat?
No boating experience is necessary. The mini boats are easy to drive, and the guide leads the group through the route. You do need a valid driver's license and must be at least 21 years old to operate the boat.
What's included in the tour price?
The tour includes life jackets for each participant, bottled water, the 2-hour guided experience, and the inflatable mini boat. Hotel pickup and gratuities are not included.
