The experience
You fly from Honolulu to Kona in the morning, then meet your guide for the drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The park sits on the slopes of Mauna Loa, where the landscape shifts from lush coffee plantations to bare volcanic rock as you climb. Your guide shares the geology and history at each stop, starting at the visitor center before heading into the park itself.
The core of the day unfolds inside the park. You walk through the Thurston Lava Tube, a natural tunnel carved by lava centuries ago, surrounded by native ferns and forest. At the Kīlauea Illi Rainforest Lookout, you stand above a massive crater ringed with green, a stark contrast to the barren volcanic landscape elsewhere in the park. At the active steam vents, you feel the heat rising from the earth: a reminder of the geothermal activity beneath your feet. Halemaʻumaʻu Crater offers views of the volcanic landscape that shaped the island. The terrain is uneven and rocky throughout, so closed-toe hiking shoes are essential. The park's elevation and volcanic gases mean the air can feel thin, and weather changes fast, so layers and a rain jacket matter.
On the way back, you stop at Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, where black volcanic sand meets coconut palms and you may spot Hawaiian green sea turtles resting on shore. Earlier in the day, you visit Greenwell Farms in the Kona region, one of Hawaii's oldest coffee operations, and Manuka State Wayside Park, a quieter stop with a two-mile nature trail through native forest. Lunch happens at Punaluʻu Bake Shop in Naʻālehu, the southernmost bakery in the U.S., where you can buy sourdough sandwiches, Kalbi beef plates, or Hawaiian plate lunches alongside their famous Hawaiian sweet bread. Bring cash for roadside stands and local shops. Many don't take cards. The return flight to Honolulu departs in the late afternoon.

What is the Thurston Lava Tube like to walk through?
The Thurston Lava Tube is a natural tunnel formed by flowing lava, surrounded by native ferns and forest. It's a short walk through a passage carved centuries ago, offering a tangible sense of how lava shaped the landscape.
Can I see active lava or volcanic activity in the park?
You won't see flowing lava, but you will feel the heat from active steam vents rising from the earth and view Halemaʻumaʻu Crater and the Kīlauea Illi Rainforest Lookout, both reminders of the island's ongoing volcanic activity.
What should I wear and bring for this tour?
Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes suitable for uneven and potentially sharp volcanic terrain. Flip-flops and sandals aren't safe. Bring layers including a rain jacket, as weather changes quickly at higher elevations and it can get cool and wet. Pack water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and cash for lunch and roadside shops. Cell service is limited in the park.

The tour runs eight to ten hours total. You fly from Honolulu to Kona in the morning and return in the late afternoon, with the park exploration and stops filling the middle of the day.
Are there any health or safety concerns I should know about?
The park is an active volcanic area with volcanic gases like sulfur dioxide, which can be harmful for people with respiratory issues like asthma. Stay on marked trails, follow all safety guidelines, and be aware that many viewpoints and trails involve walking on uneven, rocky terrain that can be challenging for those with limited mobility.
