The experience
The tour runs four to five hours and covers the North Shore's most famous stops in a single loop. You start at a small coffee farm on the North Shore itself (seven acres with roughly 3,000 arabica coffee trees), where you can sample coffee and tea and walk through the garden to see how the beans get from tree to cup. From there the route moves through Dole Plantation, the island's largest visitor attraction, then into Haleiwa town, where plantation-era buildings line the streets and the place still holds its historic roots.
The beaches and breaks come next. Laniakea Beach, also called Turtle Beach, is where green sea turtles often rest on the sand. Waimea Bay switches between two seasons: winter brings 30-foot waves that draw the world's best surfers, while summer calms the water for swimming and snorkeling. Shark's Cove sits on a lava-rock beach at Pupukea Beach Park, named for a reef that looks like a shark from above. Pipeline is the one everyone knows: huge waves that break in shallow water over a sharp reef, forming the hollow tubes surfers chase. Sunset Beach is another major surf spot and hosts the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing between November and February.
Laie Point State Wayside Park offers a view of a rocky arch in the ocean and the mountains where Jurassic Park was filmed. It's also the cliff from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The tour ends at Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut Farm near Ka'a'awa, a country-feel property where you can see chickens and other animals around the main store. A guide leads the entire route and speaks your choice of language. Pickup happens from Waikiki hotels at no extra charge.
