The experience

The driver picks you up at your Waikiki hotel and the day unfolds around your interests. You might start at the Duke Kahanamoku Statue, move through hidden Waikiki beaches most visitors miss, then head to Hanauma Bay, a beginner-friendly snorkel spot, or skip it entirely. The North Shore is on the route: Waimea Bay (home to the Eddie, the world's most prestigious big wave competition), the surf towns and the beaches themselves. Mokolii Island sits just offshore and whale-watching is possible during season.

The Halona Blowhole is a 35,000-year-old lava tube that shoots seawater into the air, and Eternity Beach (used for filming "From Here to Eternity" and "Pirates of the Caribbean") sits nearby. At Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut Farm you get free macadamia nut coffee and a tasting. The Polynesian Cultural Center is an option if you want to spend a full afternoon exploring Pacific cultures, though the operator recommends booking it separately. Movie locations, the Kualoa Ranch Jurassic Park tour, and other stops can be added. Just call ahead to arrange them.

Your guide handles the driving and knows where to go. You choose the language (English, Spanish or German) when you book. The tour runs about 6 hours, though you can ask your guide to add extra time and pay as you go. Lunch isn't included, but the operator suggests budgeting around $15 per person and can stop at local food trucks. You get one box of water per guest included. If you're staying outside Waikiki or need pickup from Honolulu Airport ($50) or the harbor ($50), call to arrange it. Pickups more than 5 miles from Waikiki may carry a surcharge.
