The experience
The tour starts in the Kona region, where you stop at Greenwell Farms, one of Hawaii's oldest coffee operations, established in 1850 on the slopes of Mauna Loa. The farm's volcanic soil and afternoon cloud cover create the conditions that made Kona coffee internationally recognized. From there, the route heads south toward Volcanoes National Park, passing through Manuka State Wayside Park and stopping at Punaluʻu Bake Shop in Naʻālehu, the southernmost bakery in the U.S., where you can buy lunch before reaching the park.
Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the guide takes you through multiple stops that show the volcano's power and the island's age. At the visitor center, you learn the park's geology before moving to the overlooks and trails. The Thurston Lava Tube is a natural tunnel carved by flowing lava, now surrounded by native rainforest. At Kīlauea Illi Rainforest Lookout, you see a massive crater ringed with lush growth. The steam vents let you feel the heat rising from geothermal activity beneath the surface. Halemaʻumaʻu Crater offers views of the volcano's ongoing power. Each stop is a different window into how the island was formed and continues to change.
After the park, the tour descends to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, where the sand is black volcanic glass and native Hawaiian green sea turtles often rest on the shore. The air-conditioned vehicle picks you up and drops you off at your hotel, and the guide speaks English throughout. Bring sturdy closed-toe shoes for the uneven volcanic terrain, layers for temperature changes at higher elevation, water and sunscreen, and cash for lunch and any roadside stops: many vendors take cash only. Cell service is limited in the park, so download maps in advance if you want them.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Thurston Lava Tube and why is it part of this tour?
The Thurston Lava Tube is a natural tunnel formed by flowing lava, now surrounded by native rainforest. Walking through it is one of the main stops on the tour because it shows how lava shaped the landscape and lets you experience the volcano's geological power firsthand.
Will I see active lava or volcanic activity on this tour?
You will see steam vents where geothermal heat rises from the earth, and you can view Halemaʻumaʻu Crater from the overlook. The park is an active volcanic area, but the specific eruption activity visible depends on current conditions. The guide will show you what is accessible on the day of your tour.
What happens at Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach?
Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach is a stop where you walk on sand made of volcanic glass and have a chance to see native Hawaiian green sea turtles resting on the shore. The beach is at sea level after the higher elevations of the park, so it offers a different volcanic landscape.
Can I get lunch during the tour?
Yes, the tour stops at Punaluʻu Bake Shop in Naʻālehu, where you can buy lunch. The bakery offers sourdough sandwiches, Kalbi beef, Hawaiian plate lunches, and fresh baked goods including their famous Hawaiian sweet bread. What should I bring for an 8- to 10-hour tour in the park?
Bring sturdy closed-toe shoes for walking on uneven and sharp volcanic terrain; layers including a rain jacket because weather changes quickly at higher elevations; water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat; and cash for lunch and roadside stops. Cell service is limited in the park, so download maps in advance if you want them offline.
