The experience

The day starts with a 30-minute drive from your Las Vegas Strip hotel to the Grand Canyon. On the way, you have the option to stop for 15 minutes at the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Bridge, the Hoover Dam Bypass, to photograph the span and the canyon walls below it. Then you move into the riding itself: an hour on an ATV, where you control the machine through the terrain, followed by an hour on horseback through a different stretch of the canyon. Both are led by a guide who rides with the group.

Lunch is included partway through the day. The whole experience runs about eight hours from pickup to return, which accounts for the drive time, both rides, the meal, and the optional bridge stop. You'll need to wear a helmet the entire time you're on the ATV. It has to fit over your hair or you need to be able to remove religious headwear. If neither works, you won't be able to ride and no refund is given. Soda and water come with the package.

What's the Hoover Dam Bypass bridge stop actually like?

The Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Bridge is a 15-minute photo opportunity. You get out, take pictures of the bridge itself and the canyon view, then get back in the vehicle. It's optional, so you can skip it if you want more time elsewhere in the day.

Do I need any riding experience to do both the ATV and the horseback parts?

No experience is required for either. The ATV ride and the horseback ride are both one hour long and both led by a guide, so you learn as you go. The activity is suitable for all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

What happens if my hair doesn't fit under the helmet?
