Deschutes River Whitewater Rafting: Class III & IV Rapids
Class III and IV whitewater, not a float down a gentle stretch
Full-day whitewater rafting on Oregon's Deschutes River runs 5.5 hours through class III and IV rapids in high-desert scenery. The operator provides all equipment, a live guide, transportation and a BBQ lunch; you paddle the whole way, with mid-trip stops to swim, hike to White River's natural rock slides or jump off a 12-foot ledge into Pirate's Cove. Minimum age is 6 years old and 45 pounds; groups of fewer than 5 are combined with others.
The Experience
The day starts at the Maupin store at 10:30 am. You'll be outfitted with all rafting gear, then transported to the put-in. The 5.5-hour paddle mixes action-packed whitewater with calmer stretches where the guide points out the geology and history of the river. Class III and IV rapids mean you're paddling hard through technical sections, not watching from a bench—your guide reads the water and adjusts the difficulty based on what your group wants, so a family with younger kids gets a different line than a crew hunting adrenaline.
Lunch happens mid-way through the day on the riverbank, and the operator brings a full BBQ spread. Between rapids, you'll pull over to swim in designated sections, hike a short way up White River to reach natural rock slides, or paddle into Pirate's Cove where you can jump from a 12-foot rock into deep water. The guide decides which stops fit the day's flow and your group's energy.
The operator has been running this trip for decades. Transportation, equipment, photos and the guide are all included in the price; you bring a change of clothes and a willingness to get soaked. Children from age 6 are welcome if they weigh at least 45 pounds. Groups smaller than 5 people are combined with other bookings on the same day.

Is this one for you?The 5.5-hour paddle fills most of a day, so book this if your schedule has a solid block free and you want to be on the water the whole time. If you need something shorter or prefer to combine rafting with other activities in a single day, a half-day trip would leave room for exploring Maupin or the surrounding area afterward.

What are class III and IV rapids like for someone who's never rafted before?
Class III rapids have waves, some rocks and moderate current that require active paddling and following the guide's commands; class IV rapids are steeper and more technical, with bigger waves and tighter maneuvering. The Deschutes trip mixes both, so you'll paddle through challenging sections but the guide controls the pace and reads your group's comfort level, adjusting which rapids you run and how aggressively you approach them.
Do I need rafting experience or special fitness to do this trip?
No experience is required. The operator asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness because you're paddling for 5.5 hours with only a lunch break, so your arms and core will work. Children as young as 6 can go if they weigh at least 45 pounds and can follow safety instructions.
What happens during the lunch stop, and how much time is there?
The guide pulls the raft ashore mid-way through the day and sets up a BBQ lunch on the riverbank. The stop gives you time to eat, rest and dry off a bit before paddling the second half of the river.
Can I jump off the rock at Pirate's Cove, or is it optional?
The 12-foot jump into Pirate's Cove is optional. The guide pulls in there as one of the mid-trip stops, and you can jump if you want to or stay in the raft and watch. It's one of several stops—you might also hike to White River's natural rock slides or swim in other sections depending on how the day flows.
What time does the trip end, and how do I get back to my car?
The 5.5-hour paddle ends in the afternoon. The operator provides transportation from the put-in back to the Maupin store where you checked in, so your car will be waiting there.
What should I bring, and what does the operator provide?
The operator provides the raft, paddles, life jacket, helmet and all safety gear; lunch and photos are included. Bring a change of clothes, water shoes or sneakers that can get wet, sunscreen and a towel. Avoid cotton—wear quick-dry fabrics.
