Fly deeper into Denali than any other tour, landing on glaciers if you choose

The Grand Denali flightseeing tour from Talkeetna covers more of the Alaska Range than any other tour available, following river systems across the Susitna Valley and over the Kahiltna Glacier—the longest in Denali National Park at 45 miles—before crossing to the remote arctic alpine tundra on the north side. You fly in a ski-equipped aircraft with live pilot commentary on individual headsets; hotel pickup and drop-off are included for select Talkeetna hotels. A glacier landing option adds 30 minutes and puts you on the ice itself.

Step-by-step itinerary

Flightseeing tour over Denali Range

  • Check in at Talkeetna State Airport
  • Board ski-equipped aircraft
  • Listen to pilot's commentary
  • Fly over Talkeetna and Susitna valley
  • View Great Gorge of Ruth Glacier
  • Explore seven major glaciers
  • Optional glacier landing experience

The Experience

The flight starts at the Talkeetna State Airport, where you check in 45 minutes before departure. You'll board a ski-equipped aircraft and hear your pilot's commentary through an individual headset as the plane climbs over the river systems of the Susitna Valley. The route takes you into an landscape of icefalls and snowy peaks, then into the Great Gorge of the Ruth Glacier—a 4,000-foot-thick river of ice that makes one of the deepest gorges in the world. From there, the flight explores seven major glaciers that blanket the south side of the Alaska Range.

The Kahiltna Glacier, stretching 45 miles, is the longest in Denali National Park, and the tour crosses over it and the full Alaska Range to reach the remote interior on the north side, where you see the arctic alpine tundra few visitors ever reach. If you add the glacier landing option, the pilot descends onto the ice itself—an extra 30 minutes that turns the view into a moment you stand on the glacier, surrounded by ridges of earth and ice. The whole flight runs roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on which option you choose.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for select hotels within Talkeetna; if you're staying outside a 3-mile radius or at a Denali National Park hotel, you'll meet the plane at the airport office (14212 E. Second Street). Infants can ride on an adult's lap, and service animals are welcome. Bring sunglasses, a light jacket in summer, and plenty of camera memory.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off for select Talkeetna hotels.

Top questions

What is the Kahiltna Glacier and why does this tour focus on it?

The Kahiltna Glacier is the longest glacier in Denali National Park at 45 miles, and this tour flies directly over it as part of a route that covers more of the Alaska Range than any other flightseeing tour available. It's the centerpiece of the deeper inland exploration.

Can I actually land on a glacier during this tour?

Yes, the glacier landing is an optional add-on that extends your flight by 30 minutes and puts you on the ice itself. It's not included in the base Grand Denali tour but can be selected at checkout.

What's included in the price, and do I need to pay for Denali National Park entry?

Hotel pickup and drop-off for select Talkeetna hotels, live pilot narration, and local taxes are included. Denali National Park entrance fees are not included in either option; the glacier landing add-on costs $15 per person.

How long does the whole flight take?

The base tour runs 1.5 to 2 hours. If you add the glacier landing, it extends by an additional 30 minutes on the ice.

What do I need to bring, and when should I arrive?

Arrive 45 minutes before your flight departure at the Talkeetna State Airport. Bring sunglasses, a light jacket (especially in summer), and plenty of camera memory. If you're staying outside a 3-mile radius of Talkeetna, you'll meet the plane at the airport office instead of arranging pickup.

Will I hear the pilot's commentary during the flight?

Yes, you'll receive live narration from your pilot through an individual headset, with commentary on the geological history and local wildlife as you fly over the glaciers and Alaska Range.
