The experience

You arrive at the Talkeetna State Airport 45 minutes before departure and board a ski-equipped aircraft with your pilot. The flight path is set each morning based on the day's weather and visibility, so you get the clearest views available. Your pilot speaks English and shares commentary about the geological history and local wildlife through your headset as you fly.

The route takes you north from Talkeetna over the Susitna Valley's river systems and into an landscape of icefalls and snowy peaks. You'll pass the Great Gorge of the Ruth Glacier, a 4,000-foot-thick river of ice that carves one of the world's deepest gorges. From there, the flight continues into the Alaska Range to show you seven major glaciers blanketing the south side of the range, including the Kahiltna Glacier, which stretches 45 miles and is the longest in Denali National Park.

If you book the glacier landing option, the pilot will set down on the ice for an additional 30 minutes, letting you step out and stand on the glacier itself. This adds time to your overall tour and includes a $15 per-person entrance fee to Denali National Park. Bring sunglasses, a light jacket and a camera with plenty of memory. Infants must sit on an adult's lap during the flight.

What’s included

  • One-hour flight in a ski-equipped aircraft.
  • live narration from your pilot over an individual headset.
  • local taxes.
  • glacier landing option (30 additional minutes on the ice, if selected at checkout).

Is this one for you?The fixed one-hour flight works for travelers with limited time in Talkeetna who want to see Denali's glaciers and peaks without committing to a full day. If you want to step onto the ice itself, book the glacier landing option. If you prefer to stay airborne and move through more terrain, the standard flight covers seven major glaciers in the same timeframe.

What's the Kahiltna Glacier and why does it matter on this tour?

The Kahiltna Glacier is the longest glacier in Denali National Park, stretching 45 miles across the south side of the Alaska Range. It's a major landmark on the flight route, and if you choose the glacier landing option, you'll land on it and spend 30 minutes on the ice itself.

How does the pilot choose the route each day?

Your pilot customizes the flight path based on that day's weather and visibility conditions, so you see the best views available rather than following a fixed route regardless of the sky.

Can I really land on a glacier, or do we just fly over it?

The standard tour is a flight-only experience. If you book the Winter Explorer with Glacier Landing option, the pilot lands the ski-equipped aircraft on the glacier itself, giving you 30 minutes to step out and stand on the ice.

What should I bring for this flight?

Bring sunglasses, a light jacket and a camera with plenty of memory. The flight departs from Talkeetna State Airport, so plan to arrive 45 minutes early for check-in at the log cabin office.
