The Experience

The plane lifts off from Talkeetna State Airport, and within minutes the scale of Denali stops being a number and becomes real. The flight runs 1.5 hours if you're doing the scenic loop, or 2 hours if the weather and landing conditions allow a touch-down on one of the glaciers. Either way, you're seeing Denali from all four sides: north, south, east, and west, which is the only way to understand how the mountain actually sits in the landscape.

The climb starts at the base, around 2,000 feet, and your eyes follow the rock and ice straight up to 20,320 feet—that vertical rise is what makes Denali different from other peaks you've seen in photos. The pilot banks toward the West Buttress, the most-climbed route on the mountain, and you spot the Climber's Base Camp clinging to the Kahiltna Glacier at 7,200 feet. Then you cross over Kahiltna Pass and the whole glacier system opens up below you—a river of ice flowing down the mountain's western face. The Sheldon Amphitheater, where glacier landings often happen, sits like a natural bowl carved by centuries of melt and movement. If the conditions are right and you're on the 2-hour flight, the plane touches down on the glacier itself, and for a few minutes you're standing on ice that's hundreds of feet thick, the silence absolute.

Flying east, the Ruth Glacier comes into view—a different kind of massive, with the Great Gorge cutting through it, granite walls rising a mile high on either side. The pilot points out the intense blue melt-water pools dotting the glacier surface, colors so vivid they don't look real from the ground. Then there's the Wickersham Wall, approximately 14,000 feet of continuous rock and ice rising almost vertically.
