The Experience

You start early, running across from a Gothic Revival church built in 1902, and move into the Arts District where the Nasher Sculpture Center holds works by Picasso, Rodin, Calder and Matisse. The guide sets a pace that works for you—there are breaks built into the route at every major stop, so you catch your breath at intersections and plazas instead of pushing through. The 4-mile distance covers significantly more ground than a walking tour would in the same time, and the flat terrain means you're not fighting hills.

The route threads through the city's layers: you pass the Dallas Museum of Art with its 25,000 works, pause at Klyde Warren Park—a 5.4-acre urban park built atop a freeway and opened in 2012—and run through Victory Plaza to see the life-size statue of Dirk Nowitzki. The West End neighborhood, preserved from the late 1800s, still carries the rough edges of its saloon-and-gambling-hall past. At Dealey Plaza, the guide explains the Kennedy assassination site and the Sixth Floor Museum in the former Texas School Book Depository. You'll see the original Pegasus that sat atop the Magnolia building for 75 years and has become Dallas's unofficial mascot, and Pioneer Plaza—the city's most photographed spot—where 49 bronze longhorn cattle and three trail riders cross a limestone stream, honoring the Shawnee Trail cattle drive that established Dallas as a commercial center.

The run takes you past I.M. Pei's Dallas City Hall, through the AT&T Discovery District with its 104-foot Media Wall, and past The Eye—a 30-foot fiberglass sculpture that's become a selfie landmark. You pass the Old Dallas Municipal Building, where Lee Harvey Oswald was shot in 1963, and the Dallas Farmers Market, established in 1941 and now a hub for fresh food and artisan vendors. The final stretch runs through Deep Ellum, the legendary entertainment district famous for street murals and live music venues, and ends at AllGood Cafe, a Deep Ellum fixture since 2000 serving chicken-fried steak, migas, breakfast tacos and biscuits. The whole tour takes about 2 hours.
