The experience

The first thing I noticed as we pulled up to the Old Red Courthouse was how the red sandstone almost glowed against the blue Texas sky. Our guide (Mark, born and raised here) had this way of weaving little facts into stories. He pointed out John Neely Bryan’s tiny log cabin nearby and joked that Dallas started “with more mud than money.” I could smell barbecue drifting over from somewhere (Deep Ellum maybe?) and for a second I wished we’d had time to stop for brisket. But then we were off again, past Pioneer Plaza. Those bronze cattle are bigger than you expect. I touched one just to check if it felt as cold as it looked (it did).

Dealey Plaza hit me harder than I thought it would. There’s this hush around the JFK Memorial, even with cars buzzing by, people just sort of lower their voices. Mark didn’t rush us. He let us stand there as long as we needed. Someone asked about conspiracy theories, and he just smiled and said everyone has their own version of Dallas history. It was weirdly comforting. The city hall building is wild (like something out of a sci-fi movie), and then suddenly you’re in these leafy neighborhoods with old Victorian houses that look like they belong in another century.

I’ll admit: I only half-remembered “Dallas” the TV show (my mom loved it), but Southfork Ranch is surreal in person. The visitor center smells faintly of leather and popcorn, which made me laugh for some reason. We rode this little train past the Ewing Oil office (someone tried to do JR’s accent and totally failed), and wandered through the mansion where they filmed all those dramatic scenes. There’s Lucy’s wedding dress on display, plus Jock’s 1978 Lincoln parked outside looking like it hasn’t moved since Carter was president. The gift shop is full of hats I was tempted to buy but didn’t (regret that now). By late afternoon my feet were tired but my head was spinning with all these bits of Dallas: the real and the made-up kind mixed together. Still thinking about that quiet moment at Dealey Plaza.
