The experience

Can you actually swim with manatees? Yes, Crystal River is the only place in the US where it's legal, and the manatees here are real. Between 700 and 1,000 migrate to the three first-magnitude springs each winter, drawn by water that stays 72 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. A smaller population of 70 to 100 lives here even in summer. Your private boat is strictly for your party, which means no jostling for position and no competing for the guide's attention while you're in the water.

The experience starts on land at Salty Siren Tours, where your in-water guide and photographer brief you on passive observation: how to move, how to position yourself, what the manatees need from you. They'll answer questions before you board. Once on the water, you wear the provided wetsuit and snorkeling gear. The guide enters the water with you and positions you to observe the manatees without chasing or cornering them. The photographer captures underwater shots throughout, and those images are yours to keep as part of the package. Hot and cold beverages, coffee, tea and snacks stay available on the heated cabin boat between water time.

Three hours covers the full outing: arrival and briefing, the boat ride to the springs, time in the water with the manatees, and the return. The boat has an on-board restroom and heated cabin, so you can warm up between water sessions. All snorkeling equipment and the wetsuit are included, so you bring only yourself and a willingness to move slowly and quietly in the water.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How many people can fit on the private boat?

The boat holds up to six passengers total, and it's reserved exclusively for your group: no other parties join you.

What happens if a manatee doesn't show up?

Manatees are wild animals and their presence is never guaranteed, though Crystal River's springs attract them reliably during winter months. The guide will position the boat where sightings are most likely based on current conditions.

Do I need to know how to snorkel before I book?

No. The in-water guide teaches you how to use the equipment and how to move in the water with the manatees. Snorkeling skill is not required, and the guide stays with you the entire time.

What's included in the photo package?

The photographer takes underwater photos during your snorkel time, and all images are included in the price (a $40 value if purchased separately). You receive digital copies to download and share.

What should I bring or wear?

Bring a towel, hat, sunblock and sunglasses. These are not provided but highly recommended. The boat supplies the wetsuit and all snorkeling gear, so you don't need to own or rent equipment separately.

Is the boat heated, and can I warm up between water sessions?

Yes. The boat has a heated cabin where you can warm up, and hot and cold beverages plus snacks are available throughout the 3-hour outing.
