The experience

Crystal River Manatee Adventures runs this tour with a captain steering the boat and an in-water guide in the water with you the whole time. You'll be in a group of no more than 6 people, which means you're not crammed onto a large vessel but you're also not paying for a fully private boat. The boat itself is fully enclosed and heated during the colder months (on days when the water is chilly, that matters), and the tour includes complimentary hot chocolate, coffee, and water while you're aboard.

What you actually do is get into the water in a wetsuit with a mask and snorkel, and the in-water guide positions you to observe manatees in their natural environment. The guide is there to help you stay safe, to point out what's happening, and to make sure the interaction stays passive and respectful of the animals. All the gear you need (wetsuits, masks, snorkels, towels) comes with the tour, so you show up without equipment. The whole thing runs about 3 hours from the time you check in until you're back at the dock, though if you book a late afternoon departure (3:30pm or later), the tour may be shorter because it has to wrap before sunset.
