The Experience

You arrive at Cocoa Beach with an afternoon or evening free and no kayak experience required. The tour operates only from July through mid-October, when the bioluminescent dinoflagellates are active in the Thousand Islands—a natural phenomenon that occurs continuously in only six places on the world. New moon nights bring the strongest glow, so timing your booking around the lunar calendar makes a real difference in what you see.

You paddle a kayak through shallow waters where every stroke of your paddle lights up the water around you. The dinoflagellates are living organisms that glow when disturbed, so the more you move, the more the water responds. You might spot bioluminescent comb jellies—jellyfish that glow in the dark—drifting through the same waters. The glow is not guaranteed to match any single preference since these are wild organisms moving with ocean currents, but on a clear new moon night the effect is visible enough that you'll understand why people travel to see it.

A live English-speaking guide leads the tour, and all equipment—kayak, paddle and lifejacket—is provided. The paddle lasts about two hours. Bring water to drink during the tour, as the physical work of paddling in warm weather adds up. Cancellations require 24 hours' notice; if weather forces a postponement, you'll receive a cancellation email about an hour before the scheduled start.
