The Experience

Paul—our guide, not Revere—handed me this chunky headset right on Boston Common. We’d barely started the walk when a group of local kids raced by, yelling about Redcoats. For a second, it actually felt like 1775 was leaking through the cracks of the city. The air smelled faintly of grass and old stone; someone nearby was roasting chestnuts, which seemed weirdly appropriate.

I didn’t expect to get so caught up in the little details—the scratchy feel of colonial coats you could “try on” (digitally, but still), or how Samuel Adams’ voice boomed out from under that big elm tree like he was talking just to us. Paul kept tossing in these side notes (“That’s where Hancock used to sneak off for tea—illegal tea, mind you”), and Li from our group tried to say something in old-school English and just gave up laughing. The AR made things pop up right in front of you: lanterns swinging, angry crowds gathering, even a cannon you could pretend to fire with your own hands. I might’ve gotten a bit too into that part.

The weather kept shifting—sun one minute, then wind whipping across Bunker Hill as we finished up. Didn’t matter though; seeing history layered over real streets made it feel less like a lesson and more like being dropped into someone else’s memory. There was this moment at Bunker Hill where everything went quiet except for distant sirens and some seagulls overhead—I still think about that silence sometimes. The tour ended there but honestly my brain stayed somewhere between centuries for the rest of the day.
