The whole group (there were a couple families and one guy from Boise who said he does this every year) piled into the shuttle at Beehive Bend. It’s only about 40 minutes from downtown Boise, but it felt like we’d left the city behind after just a few turns. The air smelled sharp and green—pine needles and river water—and someone in the back cracked a joke about “not needing coffee now.”
After Jake’s safety talk up at Banks (he made us all practice our paddle moves—my left arm still doesn’t listen), we pushed off onto the Payette River. I didn’t expect how cold the water would feel on my hands, or how loud it gets when you’re right up against those rapids. The first big one—Go Left or You’re Fired—came up faster than I thought. Everyone yelled at once, but somehow we made it through without flipping. There was this moment after where everything went quiet except for the sound of water slapping rocks and some birds overhead. I caught myself grinning like an idiot.
Between rapids, Jake pointed out osprey nests and told us stories about people who’d tried to swim across here (don’t). We even stopped so some folks could jump in for a swim—I dipped my feet in but chickened out of the full plunge. The sun kept peeking through clouds and you could see steam rising off the wet life jackets. At one point my brother tried to splash me with his paddle and nearly fell in himself—Jake laughed so hard he almost dropped his oar.
The trip ended back where we started at Beehive Bend, everyone dripping wet and swapping stories about which rapid was scariest (I’m still voting for AMF). They handed us free photos that actually caught me mid-scream—which is…something. Even now I keep thinking about that stretch of river—how wild it felt but also safe with people who knew every bend.
